Jean E. Smith-Gonnell to Discuss the Future of Cannabis and Hemp Legality at TPPPA 2025 Solving the Payments Puzzle Conference

Partner Jean E. Smith-Gonnell will share insights on the current status and future of cannabis legality at the upcoming Third Party Payment Processors Association (TPPPA) 2025 Solving the Payments Puzzle Conference on Wednesday, November 12.

The conference will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, and will run from November 12 – 14, featuring presentations from attorneys and industry professionals covering updates in payments and payments compliance.

In her session, titled “Cannabis Update: The Dichotomy Between Marijuana and Hemp Law and the Future of Legality,” Jean will discuss the status and future of cannabis pertaining to current legality and potential illegality in the future on a federal and state level, including:

  • State legislation regulating hemp
  • Potential effects of rescheduling
  • Impending federal definition changes
  • State trends for marijuana and hemp

Jean focuses her cannabis practice on corporate, regulatory, transactional, and litigation matters for dispensaries, growers, receivers, investors, and other industry stakeholders. She assists clients in disputes, maintaining regulatory compliance, cannabis licensing, mitigating legal risks, establishing and reorganizing their companies, and day-to-day operations.

The TPPPA is a national not-for-profit industry association that was founded in 2013 to represent and promote the interests of payment processors, their financial institutions, and their merchants. Members must apply and be accepted into the TPAAA, which includes vendors, banks, merchants, and payment processors.
